Learning how to Tailgate

Updated: Dec 2, 2024

Tailgating played a pretty major theme in my childhood. From Eagles games to Jimmy Buffet Concerts, the art of Tailgating was a secondary skill I learned from the best that was woven through my childhood.

The first memory of Tailgating I have is with my dad at the Meadowlands. We would head to Rutherford from Malvern annually for the Eagles vs. Giants Game. I was born in Connecticut and my dad had made many friends in NYC, The Guys from NY as they would eternally be called. The Guys from NY would take a private bus in from Runyons, their local watering hole in the city, and we would jump on the NJ Turnpike to meet in the parking lot. I started doing this almost every year from 1985-1997, The Guys From NY taught me how to tailgate. Some years it was so cold the soup froze in the thermos.

At halftime, we would meet in the councourse and all The Guys from NY would get in line to buy beer. There was a 2 beer limit so to ensure plenty of cold ones without having to leave during the second half, they would position me in the corner and appoint me the beer guard. There I was 10 years old guarding all the beer. I did this for years as the guys from NY would drop off their beer and get back in line.

I was the beer keeper for many years, until I wasn't.

It was Oct 15, 1995. I took my duty station during half time and one of the Guys From NY looked at me and snapped,

"Donio, what are you doing"

I responded with, "watching the beer."

He again snapped, "not any more your not, you're 21 now, get your ass in line"

The Eagles won 17-14. If you want to watch the game, here it is.
